If I look at the two families to which I am closely related – my own and my husband’s – I can see that the last three generations illustrate clearly that we are in a crisis. My mother was an only child and my father had one brother. I have two brothers, neither of whom have children. I have two children. My husband is one of six. Two of his siblings do not have children.

Schools, in particular, will, in future, no longer be the sole domain of teachers or of education but will also be home to social workers and health workers. The range of educational provision will also vary from being child-focused to providing life-long learning opportunities for carers. The intention behind this is to provide ways back into education for people, many of whom may have been receiving benefits. The availability of a range of practitioners located either on a regular or ad hoc basis, in children’s centres or extended schools meets the recommendations of the Laming Report, which are taken forward by Every Child Matters, to provide a coherent inter-disciplinary, multi-agency service that is able to respond quickly and effectively to the issues and concerns in the community.
