He administered his herbal cures to hundreds while ordering them to bathe. These treatments were credited with stopping the plague in Salon, and grateful city leaders gave Nostradamus a pension for life. In 1547 he married a rich widow, Anne Posart Gemelle, and set up a laboratory in her home. There, working deep into the night, Nostradamus pursued his true passions, studying magic and astrology and writing prophecies. In later centuries, the satanic beast came to be referred to as the Antichrist, although this term is never mentioned in Revelation. A second beast emerges from the earth with two horns like a lamb but speaking like a dragon. The land beast is a servant to the sea beast with seven heads. The new beast builds a statue of the sea beast, breathing life into it and making it talk. The land beast performs miracles that force the world to worship Satan. The land beast demands “the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, the small and the great” receive Satan’s emblem, later called the Mark of the Beast, on the right hand or forehead.

When the seventh trumpet sounds, it is time for God to unleash his wrath on nonbelievers. The dramatic prophecy begins with John’s vision of Jesus as a child in the sky with a woman, the Virgin Mary who is, “adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with twelve stars on her head for a crown” (12:1–2). A monstrous red Dragon with ten horns and seven heads tries to eat the child but is challenged by the archangel Michael and other angels. A battle ensues between the angels and the Dragon. As the angels defeat the Dragon and cast him down to Earth, Jesus is taken to heaven for protection.
