Some of them grow under a very limited range of conditions, others are encountered almost everywhere. The summary of the summary is that one can best learn about fungi not from a general discussion of them, but from a study of how the individual fungi live and grow and reproduce. Which brings us to the next chapter. Additional Reading C. J. Alexopoulos, Introductory Mycology, zd ed. 613 pp. M. J. Berkeley, Outlines of British Fungology. London: Lovell Reeve, 1860. 442 pp. E. Some of the higher plants involved in this kind of partnership have become so dependent upon the fungus on their roots that they have lost their chlorophyll. Even their organic carbons must be furnished by the fungus. What started out as an adventure in cooperation has, in some cases, evolved into a dependence so complete and inflexible, and sometimes of so low a survival value, that both partners seem doomed to extinction. Some, on the other hand, are very successful indeed. A few case histories will make us more familiar with what mycorrhizas are, what they do, and how they have influenced the structure and economy of some of the seed plants.

As a team they seem to have assured themselves of a variety of places in the sun as well as in the shade. And also to have assured themselves of long-time survival. If in some cases one or the other or both have given up independence for the sake of permanence, this is just one of the risks of partnership. The statement "He who has partners, has masters" is well exemplified by the lichens. Fungi and algae had explored this truth long before humankind. Even in reproduction of the dual plant, the two partners work together.
