Example text

The point is a simple 20 • Political correctness and higher education one: if the First Amendment (‘government shall pass no law that inhibits the freedom of speech’) is a fundamental principle then anyone who would dare to interfere with it can be easily castigated as un-American. PC has been tarred with this brush on many occasions, and the irony that it is in universities where there have been the most reported restrictions on free speech has not been lost. However, some authors have sought to rise to this challenge: racist slurs do not serve any First Amendment purposes: they contribute little to self-realization, to dialogue on important matters of public policy, or to the discovery of truth.

Perhaps not surprisingly she was criticized at the time for the manner of her argument throughout the text (Lazare 1997). She dismisses the ideas of Stanley Fish, who, at the time, was defending restrictions on speech on the grounds that, in reality, free speech only protects the rich and powerful: ‘the first amendment is the first refuge of scoundrels’ (Fish 1994), and proceeds to give examples of double standards. Essentially this amounts to saying that when some groups speak out against others they are celebrated for doing so, but when others do so they are castigated.

A key feature of the second section will be to argue that PC debate in Britain seems to be much more in keeping with some of the more traditional notions of PC – that is the politics and correctness involved in establishing orthodoxies. Indeed, one possible explanation of why the literature base on PC is so great in the US is because much of that literature is an attempt to redefine, or perhaps better, to reorient the term in order that it be marshalled to defend a particular kind of higher education and form of wider social solidarity.
