Psychodynamic music therapy: parenting, play and pathology Parenting: a parallel between therapy and parenting processes This is key to understanding the overall process within psychodynamic music therapy (Sobey and Woodcock 1999), validated by the experience of mother–infant observation and the notion of music as a universal ‘first language’ of experience and intersubjectivity. The environmental provision of music therapy can be seen as akin to the ‘facilitating environment’ (Winnicott 1965) provided by the parent.
