T h e r e are parents who attempt to k e e p the child as a baby, and the symptoms satisfy something in the m o t h e r w h o wants to see her child independent but can scarcely let him go from her side.

T h e y may be particularly faddy over food and often refuse breakfast. T h e y lose weight, and may, indeed, even lose the use of their legs. If pressure over school attendance is withdrawn, most of these symptoms go into abeyance, although the children remain maladjusted. O t h e r s may be at t h e beginning of a m o r e complete withdrawal from life; school is just o n e activity of m a n y from which they contract out. They may lock themselves in their b e d r o o m s and refuse to see relatives, friends, or officials.
