The most important of these has to do with conditional (‘if ... then’) sentences. There are three main types of conditionals, some involving and some not involving the past tense: (i) If it rains, we will cancel the game. [present tense] (ii) If it rained, we would cancel the game. [past tense] (iii) If it had rained, we would have cancelled the game. [past perfect] From these examples alone, without a context, it would be hard to guess what the differences are.
