5 Streptococcal Superantigens Association of SAg with Disease Although the exact pathogenic function of superantigen is not known, it is still clear that these proteins imbalance the host immune system by activation of nonspecific T-cells and burst release of cytokines. Interestingly, the antibodies generated by a SAg are not expected to cross react with other superantigen, thus restricting the host efficiency to counteract multiple toxins (Bavari et al. 1999). Understanding the co-relation of superantigens with diseases is further more complicated because of variations in superantigen pattern present in the bacteria and their expression in vivo.
3 Clinical Studies There are many clinical cases wherein IVIG was used as an adjunctive therapy in streptococcal cases, especially in StrepTSS (Jolles et al. 2005). Many case reports (Schrage et al. 2006; Barry et al. 1992; Cawley et al. 1999), observational cohorts 30 Streptococcal Superantigens (Norrby-Teglund et al. 2005), case-control study (Kaul et al. 1995) and multi-centered placebo-control study (Darenberg et al. 2003). The multi-centered placebo-control study was prematurely terminated because of slow patient recruitment (Darenberg et al.
