This will be taken up in Part II, which deals with the expansion of now-stabilization to what we call time. Now and Proto-Present All of this emphasis on difference would seem to imply that consciousness is a bumpy ride, as we ratchet our way from event to impulse to percept. Discussions of the psychological present in the psychology literature tend to exaggerate its frozen moment aspect. Psychologists want to know how long by the clock a present can last, and what variables affect its perceived duration.

And further on I will claim that the past and the future share a great deal, but differ in that what they share is taken in two ways in the two cases. Language makes no broad distinctions of value among the past, present and future tenses of language; in speaking and writing we treat them as  time and the warm body segments of a continuum. If there is one of the three tenses accorded less honor than the others, it would be the present tense, perhaps because of its inescapability: the speaker is always in the present and there is always something or other going on, something to do.

The literature on meditation refers to the representation of the foundational level by names other than temporal ones, such as “pure consciousness” or “first-order consciousness,” or “non-conceptual” or “pristine” awareness. Or under designations deriving from one or another religious tradition, such as “no-mindness” in Zen Buddhism. Meditation does not access a foundational level of the world by identifying it as a distinct object among the innumerable objects of the world. Rather it works by releasing the grip of awareness on those innumerable objects.
