The PERCS framework we devised worked well at Fenway. I had first seen this framework in operation during visits to CPESS. Sitting in on students’ portfolio presentations in fourteen different subject areas (including math, science, humanities, arts, and service learning) I had been struck by the facility with which faculty and students (and parents) used a common vocabulary for discussing work and asking questions. As we adopted the framework and made it ours at Fenway, we insisted that students use each aspect of PERCS in their approach to all of their subjects.
Everyone listens to performers like Alicia Keys, and rappers speak to many life experiences. I’ve learned that people like Gustav Mahler, who most kids have never heard of, also wrote about pain and suffering the same way that Kanye West or Billie Holiday did.
