Without access to the broader perspective that higher education can provide we run the risk of producing a profession that is ever more inward-looking. (Furlong, TES, 29 January 1993) We thoroughly concur with this view and would only add that, with the many technological changes taking place both outside and inside the school system, to which we have already referred and which affect all aspects of education, the present is perhaps the very worst time for this ‘inwardlooking’ stance to characterize the teaching profession.

Many of those working in teacher education in HEIs in the late 1970s and 1980s had held senior positions in schools in the 1960s; hence the need to protect young teachers from their influence and especially the ‘trendy’ methods of teaching they were claimed to have introduced under the influence of the Plowden Report, Children and their Primary Schools, of 1967 which explicitly recommended a balance of ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ teaching but which has consistently, in recent discussion, been characterized as only recommending the latter.
