Page 6 Now the gods were even more angered by the actions of the two battling brothers, Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl. Once more the gods selected another to carry the sun. This time they selected the sister of Tlaloc. She was Chalchiuhtlicue, the goddess of corn. In their great jealousy that any other god should carry the sun, Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl once again struck down the appointed carrier. As Chalchiuhtlicue fell to the earth, the sky opened up with heavenly waters. A great flood covered the earth, and for a fourth time the earth and all living creatures on it were destroyed.

Time after time I listened to Hispanic adults, teenagers, and children talk about how revealing it was to learn about the glory of the Aztec indigenous culture. Especially important was the acceptance that Hispanic culture in America was influenced not only by its Spanish roots but also by its indigenous past. The legacy of my family's cuentos were only enhanced by the inclusion of the stories of the ancient culture that came from Aztlan, the Aztec people's mythic homeland to the north.
