Experiential learning and learning styles Building on the work of Kurt Lewin, Kolb (1975, 1984, 1993) has been a key contributor to the theory that effective learning concerns the reinterpretation and reshaping of experience. This is based on the assumption that people learn best by doing things then thinking about how they have done them, considering both the details of the experience and the thoughts, feelings and perceptions which emerged during the experience. Effective learning is seen when a person progresses through a cycle of four stages: of (1) having a concrete experience followed by (2) observation of and reflection on that experience which leads to (3) the formation of abstract concepts (analysis) and generalisations (conclusions) which are then (4) used to test hypotheses in future situations, resulting in new experiences.

The idea that the ability to learn is dependent on a single, innate, fixed and quantifiable general capacity of the human mind is strongly challenged by evidence that suggests that learning is assisted or impeded by various and numerous factors.

Commercially available packages, written to national standards and approved by government, will relieve teachers, if they choose to use them, of some of their instructional role. Interactive programmes are now commonplace. But this approach needs careful planning. Students will not learn effectively just by being placed in front of a computer expected to get on with it. ’ Teachers themselves will be able now to create high quality teaching materials which are just as professional looking as those available commercially.
