The trend continued to rake in profits until 1919, when Theda’s contract expired. After a European vacation, she returned to New York to star in an overtly campy play entitled The Blue Flame. Theda and the show were roundly pummeled by critics, but did very well for themselves on the national tour afterwards. In 1925 the now-forty-year-old actress made a comeback attempt in a film for Chadwick Pictures, playing the wife of a philanderer. The Unchastened Woman stands as Theda Bara’s finest performance.
