Interpretivist/hermeneutic approaches We noted in Chapter 2 that one of the chief characteristics of science in a positivistic mode is that it cannot be aware of its own cultural confusions. We attributed this to positivism’s failure to recognize reflexivity. The consequence of this is the failure by researchers to recognize the complexity of their own practice. The reason for this is not hard to find. Positivism as an epistemology provides a powerful yet idealized model of scientific research, which has shaped the pre-understandings of researchers, even those not working in the natural sciences, and hence their portrayal of what they are doing when they do research and who they are as researchers.

With the notion of text, writing is directed against the central conviction of the realist metaphysic and of Western culture; the idea of an original, organizing centre. The real cannot any longer be seen as an authorizing centre of this kind, an unmediated given that grounds a representative validity; the textuality of our knowledge of the world means that it is difficult to keep on thinking in terms of unproblematically representing the world ‘as it really is’. This is a point supported in a more general way by Lemert (2005a).
