“I used to inspire scholars to not be cast off from the brilliance of Aristotle's rules by way of the density of his implementing prose, till I stumbled on the rigorous and readable set of translations by means of Joe Sachs. What moves me so much during this welcome new translation of Aristotle's Politics is the feel of Aristotle as a guy pondering conscientiously tips to discuss political realities he studied and witnessed, instead of a treatise-builder expounding political doctrines.”
—Nathan Andersen, Eckerd College

“Joe Sachs’ masterful translation of Aristotle’s Politics is the newest in a sequence encompassing Aristotle’s Physics, (1995), Metaphysics (1999), at the Soul and On reminiscence and Recollection (2001), Nicomachean Ethics (2002), Poetics (2006) and Rhetoric (2009). This truth by myself units him except all different fresh translators of the Politics: he's the single person who isn't really a expert in a single sector of Aristotelian philosophy and his holistic command of the corpus permits him to bring the main nuanced and distinct translations on hand in English. furthermore, he set himself the aim of fending off in them using the normal scholastic terminology which obstructs loads the translation of Aristotle’s proposal. The Politics poses a special problem for the translator since it is a piece of political philosophy, consequently it unavoidably has sorts of readers in view and its language is either logically detailed and rhetorically strong. Joe Sachs’ translation renders either features with unequalled splendor and precision.”
—Antonio Marino López, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

This translation is a needs to, either for students engaged on or differently drawn to Aristotle's Politics in addition to for college students and others who can be examining this article for the 1st time. certainly, Sachs’ textual content bargains an comprehensible translation of 1 of crucial Aristotelian texts, whereas ultimate super trustworthy to the unique Greek. furthermore, the supplementary positive aspects of Sachs’ translation, which come with notes that aid supply extra knowing and context for convinced claims, in addition to the thesaurus and the precis of Contents, which seem on the finish of the textual content, supply extraordinary aids if you are invested in realizing Aristotle's Politics.”

“Joe Sachs has a rare skill to render historical Greek into English sentences which are so transparent and direct that they assist readers to seem earlier Aristotle’s technical terminology and think of the philosophical matters within the textual content. For starting scholars Sachs’s translations are an amazing automobile wherein to have interaction Aristotle’s philosophy. For these folks who're extra complicated, they're sufficiently various from the normal translations to open clean methods of considering the texts. Sachs does a great task with the Politics. the interpretation is particularly readable and actual, and the notes and thesaurus are insightful. The introductory essay via Lijun Gu valuably emphasizes the significance of publication IV.”

II. “A human being by nature is an animal meant for the city”— Politics I, 2 It has been said that passages at the end the Nicomachean Ethics subordinate the Politics to the Ethics. Is this really true, or does the Politics stand on its own and have its intrinsic value separate from the Ethics? A comparison of two passages is a good place to start. The first one is from the Ethics: “And what is referred to as self-sufficiency would be present most of all in the contemplative life, for while the wise and the just person, and the rest, are in need of the things that are necessary for living, when they are sufficiently equipped with such things, a just person still needs people toward whom and with whom he will act justly, and similarly with the temperate and the courageous person and each of the others, but the wise person is able to contemplate even when he is by himself, and more so to the extent that he is the more wise.

Likewise, Aristotle’s investigation of politics has a guiding principle, but it is not one long logical sequence with one single beginning. It may involve multiple beginnings and follow along multiple paths. These multiple beginnings and paths are meant to be grasped and understood as a whole, even though the presentation of this understanding has to be broken up and arranged on pages in a sequence. This inherent tension between the understanding of the whole and its presentation in parts may be at the root of much of the discontent over the organization of the book.

But while the Politics that Aristotle wrote does have a dialectical side, and while it does contribute to the practical political task, that dialectic does not and cannot replace or override the variety of practical arrangements that circumstances call for. This is true not only because the political art, like that of the doctor, must be applied to human beings who vary, so that there can never be a single right approach to curing their ills; in the case of political life, some strong traditional human opinions will necessarily guide and limit the organization of political communities from the outset.
