The key idea behind Diffeomorphic Demons (DiffDemons) is to restrict the entire space of deformations vector fields optimized by Demons algorithm to a space of diffeomorphic transformations by combining a recently developed Lie algebra framework on diffeomorphisms, and an optimization procedure for Lie groups. In order to apply these two algorithms (Demons and DiffDemons) for multimodal registration, an histogram matching was performed by normalizing the grayscale values of a source image based on the grayscale values of the reference one at a specified number of quantile values [16].
