Walker and Messinger use the term ‘boundary’ to represent the factors that encourage a shared sense of identity within families. They argue that within the nuclear family model dominant in Western societies, there are strong boundaries separating the nuclear family household from the outside world. These include the physical boundaries of the home, but also more implicit boundaries of intimacy, dependence, authority and ritual which symbolise and represent the solidarity of the family and serve to distinguish it from other families and households.

Fast and Cain, 1966; Visher and Visher, 1978; Furstenberg, 1980; Giles-Sims, 1984), also reflect the ambiguity there is about the ways in which step-parent roles in particular should be performed. The issue was captured well by Fast and Cain (1966) who first posed the question of just how much of a parent a step-parent should be.
