Replete with desire, private life represents the inherent semiotic play in the attempts of institutions to set down their law and ground their self-definitions and rules. Individuals can represent certain institutional positions provisionally, but the changes in power relations only happen as individuals, in private interactions 26 F e m i n i s t Th e or y and seductions, exchange positions with each other. With public life and public struggles funneled as symbols through private encounters, with social power thereby made immanently unstable and negotiable, there is no way for individuals to interact directly with the institutions that produce the symbols nor intentionally and purposively participate in them, through them, or against them.
But to my embarrassment I find I cannot disentangle an erotic which I believe to be gender-irrelevant from hypergendered scenarios.
