Second, by integrating theoretical and comparative insights as to the role and significance of different actors, we seek to provide a reasonably comprehensive picture of the motivations, interests and actions of those actors in a manner that is not possible through locality studies.
However, this chapter first examines the idea of a politicised environment—its possible meanings and topography—as well as the implications for the field of Third World political ecology of research based on this idea.
