Nonetheless, I think it is the wrong way to proceed in developing the philosophical significance of film. There are two basic reasons for this. My first reservation about Cavell’s view has to do with his narrow focus upon skepticism as the philosophical question that links film to philosophy. Skepticism about the reality of the external world and the existence of other minds – as the two traditional skeptical concerns are most widely characterized – are certainly important philosophical issues both historically and thematically.
They are then asked to endorse a general principle on the basis of their reaction to this case. 13 I will discuss the nature of thought experiments – and films’ embodiment of them – more fully in the following chapters. Here, I only want to point out that thought experiments are one example of the presence of a narrative in philosophy. Even though a thought experiment tells a particular story, the truth that it intends to validate is general, for it does not rely on the specific details of the narrative.
What are the basic constituents of reality? What makes an action morally right? Must art be beautiful? Each of these questions address what might be thought of as a basic human concern. But what is also unique about them is that they are not addressed by any other academic discipline or intellectual pursuit. Psychologists, for example, worry about different styles of knowing, but they never address the question of whether the knowledge we do possess accurately characterizes the world as it actually is.
