19 While identifying some of the important changes which took place in art during the 1970s, including its ideological and political struggles, Walker also highlights the increasing pluralism of artistic practice which permeated society and demonstrates the high level of cultural exchange which was taking place between the artistic fringe and the mainstream. In accounting for much of the neglected artistic culture of the period, Walker dispenses with notions of the ‘dominant’ and ‘popular’ and offers a careful reading of the decade in terms of cultural influences and ideas.
Case studies will examine a selection of films to present a detailed picture of the eclectic, diverse and often challenging film culture of the period. These case studies are used to draw out issues of authorship, casting, finance, control and conflict during the production process, marketing, censorship, exhibition and audience response. Setting up my study in this way allows me to draw attention to the way in which the industry and its culture of production created and informed the film texts of the period.
