ANGEL AND THE BADMAN (1947). , and James Edward Grant (director). The wounded and unconscious “badman,” Quirt Evans (Wayne), is taken in by a Quaker family who espouse strict nonviolence. Delirious for days, he finally wakes up and continues his recuperation in the Quakers’ home. During Evans’s recovery, a strange thing happens to both the hardened outlaw and the naïve, innocent girl (Russell): the young girl, who has been tending to the badman’s injuries, falls in love with an outlaw, and the outlaw turns out to be not so bad after all.
ALTMAN, ROBERT (1925–2006). After graduating from the University of Missouri with a degree in engineering and flying fighter planes in World War II, Robert Altman entered the film industry by making industrial films. During the 1960s he mostly worked in television. After making his first hit film, MASH, in 1970, he began a long career of successful hits, including two significant Westerns: McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971) and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson (1976). Both films celebrate the end of classic Westerns and work squarely in the antimyth tradition.
The sheriff (George Kennedy) is also madly in love with Maria (though she is not in love with him) and pursues the outlaws, foolishly hoping to impress her. Kennedy plays a good-hearted, honest but inept bumpkin, certainly not worthy of the wealthy and refined senorita. Andrew V. McLaglen’s film has great scenery and wonderful music by Jerry Goldsmith. It is a beautiful story, a 1960s pre-Vietnamera Western showing that cultural changes are on the way. One way that Bandolero! bridges this major cultural transition period is through Stewart’s character.
