We requested that Jack undergo statutory assessment in order to secure a statement of special educational needs (see Friel, Friel and Hay 1996). This, we hoped, would allow for the provision of the programme through the local education authority (LEA). The assessment and statementing processes were tedious and time-consuming and resulted in the LEA prescribing a minimal and unsatisfactory provision for Jack. We then began an appeal to the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tribunal. Jack’s programme began months before the funding issues were resolved and this had serious financial implications.

In the company of these two people, along with Alice and Ben, Sam was to embark on an amazing journey of learning. Early programming Clearly, Sam was a little chap who already had many of the ‘beginning’ skills detailed in the Lovaas curriculum. For example, Sam had a reasonable understanding of language and spoke well, if oddly, and his ability to copy, to discriminate and to follow directions were not issues for his programme. He was able to do these things when he chose to – thus he did not need to be taught these things in the way other children on the programme might.

Whilst Sam has travelled a long way, he still finds the world a little disconcerting sometimes, but is very comfortable to say, ‘I’m confused’ and to take the help that is offered. He has become so much more himself over the years I have watched him learning and growing and I look forward to his development from a charming and engaging child to an equally engaging young man. Below are some notes from Sam’s brother Robert, outlining his reflections on having a brother who has undertaken a Lovaas programme.
