However, some changes had to be made because there exist two copies of the history, one at the Gallaudet College Archives, another at the Library of Congress Manuscript Division. The manuscript copy at Gallaudet College is believed to be the original draft. It is written entirely in Dr. Gallaudet's hand and contains original correspondence from Amos Kendall. The manuscript copy at the Library of Congress, however, is much more formal. It is written in a secretarial hand and contains few spelling or other errors.

All other citations, in spite of their wealth of information, were not included due to the sheer volume of the material involved. Interested researchers will be able to acquire copies of this material by contacting the Gallaudet College Archives. The editors were guided by a self-imposed rule that this should be Dr. Gallaudet's history. However, some changes had to be made because there exist two copies of the history, one at the Gallaudet College Archives, another at the Library of Congress Manuscript Division.
