Consider enlisting peers to be more tolerant when students on the autism spectrum ask them questions. This is discussed more fully in the next section. A lesson plan for this and a handout for neurotypical peers appear at the end of this chapter. Approaches for Social Inclusion with Neurotypical Teens In most inclusion settings, social inclusion primarily rests on the neurotypical schoolmates. The symptoms shown by teens on the spectrum are often viewed by uninformed classmates as odd, eccentric, and peculiar.

Students who experienced social rejection showed the reverse pattern. Students who were more cooperative with peers and teachers were better able to be socially accepted. This principle applied to all students, not just those on the spectrum, and probably influenced the ‘‘like to work with’’ ratings more than the ‘‘like to socialize with’’ ratings. Kids with autism spectrum disorder who were more cautiously friendly were more successful at being accepted by neurotypical peers. The implications are clear: teaching cautious social approaches may not lead to friendships, but indiscriminately trying for friendships may jeopardize ‘‘like to work with’’ ratings by peers and not lead to friendships anyway.
