If so, some entirely responsible parents might sometimes consider time spent doing something else that promotes the child’s overall development as just as important as being at school. It’s ‘education’ that is the goal, not just attendance: equipping children for life through enjoying and achieving. This will be heresy to some, but perhaps even occasional cheap trips to Spain in termtime with their family might be just as important for some children’s wider development as another week in lessons.

It is not necessarily a good thing to have no unauthorised absence at all if authorisation has been given inappropriately. Registration Regulations 2006 Teachers and other school-based workers need to be aware that most issues in registration and attendance practice are defined by regulation. But it is important that the use of technology is not seen, in itself, as a solution to problems of poor attendance. It is the interpretation and use of the data that really matters, even allowing for the helpfulness of being able to do the calculations much more easily and the ease of producing an individual pupil’s record.

That is not, however, how most attendance problems will be resolved. Attendance law is highly detailed in determining how parents, schools and local authorities should respond to absence. But they are not as great, nor necessarily as effective, as many might have imagined.
