Chapter 21 attends explicitly to the questions around how we analyse the products and processes of PAR. Chapter 22 provides some frameworks for considering how learning may take place in PAR and how it may be assessed to inform the process. In Chapter 23, the challenging issues of representation and dissemination are discussed in the context of PAR’s mandate to inform change by reaching multiple audiences. Some of the institutional benefits and challenges of doing three different forms of PAR within the academy are analysed in Chapter 24.
Since then, others like Hart (1992) have adapted this into the specific context of Participatory Research with children and young people. Here, however, Hart recognised that rather than child mobilisation being the most successful outcome of a participatory process, adults in positions of greater power and authority need to actively support child-led initiatives in a spirit of ongoing collaboration. It is these aspects that drew us to PAR. It has not always proven an easy path to follow and, like many of our contributors, we have encountered many barriers to adopting a PAR approach within university environments (see also Fine, forthcoming). Nevertheless, as the many rich and exciting examples presented in this book show, it is a path well worth taking. While we retain a critical and reflexive perspective on PAR and recognise its limits and dangers (Kesby et al. , Chapter 4 in this volume).
