Phase 1 The enzyme system responsible for the metabolism of xenobiotics are of several types, but perhaps the most important phase 1 system is that referred to generically as the cytochrome P450 system. This is an extremely widespread, and therefore evolutionarily ancient, enzyme g r o u p , being represented in virtually all eukaryotic organisms (animals, plants, protozoa and fungi) and quite a few prokaryotes (such as bacteria). Its functions include the catalysis of several important reactions of endogenous substrates and the activation of many xenobiotics.
