Talk to the pupil to find out a bit about them. ● Set a subject target with a reward system. ● ● ● Focus your comments on the behaviour, not on the pupil, and offer an alternative way of behaving when correcting the pupil. Use positive language and verbal praise whenever possible. Tell the pupil what you want them to do – ‘I need you to . . , I want you to . ’ – rather than ask. This avoids confrontation and allows the possibility that there is room for negotiation. ● Give the pupil a choice between two options.
People with Asperger’s Syndrome have average to high intelligence but share the same Triad of Impairments. They often want to make friends but do not understand the complex rules of social interaction. They have impaired fine and gross motor skills, with writing being a particular problem. Boys are more likely to be affected – with the ratio being 10:1 boys to girls. Because they appear ‘odd’ and naïve, these pupils are particularly vulnerable to bullying. Main characteristics: ● ● ● Social interaction Pupils with Asperger’s Syndrome want friends but have not developed the strategies necessary for making and sustaining friendships.
Pupils with CP may also have learning difficulties. They may use a wheelchair or other mobility aid. Main characteristics: There are three main forms of cerebral palsy: ● spasticity – disordered control of movement associated with stiffened muscles ● athetosis – frequent involuntary movements ● ataxia – an unsteady gait with balance difficulties and poor spatial awareness Pupils may also have communication difficulties.
