This term was first used by Molly Haskell to describe a particular kind of sexist Western coming to prominence since the 1960s. In buddy movies the friendships between a particular set of male friends transcends any male-female relationships that might present themselves. Examples from the post-Western era include The Professionals (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), The Magnificent Seven (1960), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). BUFFINGTON, ADELE (1900–1973). Born Adele Burgdorfer, Buffington is often considered, along with fellow screenwriter Betty Burbridge, as a writer whose talents, because she was a woman, were wasted on low-budget Westerns.
BLAKE, ROBERT (1933– ). Although better known for his nonWestern roles, Robert Blake has appeared regularly in Westerns throughout his career. Billed as Bobby Blake, he began his career in the Our Gang television series and then gained an early reputation for his role as Little Beaver in over 20 films in the Red Ryder series from 1944 to 1947. His most significant Western role, however, was in Abraham Polonsky’s antimyth Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969) in which Blake played Willie, an innocent Native American accused of murder and pursued in a massive hunt.
