He introduces Hamilton to Jill, an Englishwoman working for the British Embassy. Guy and Jill soon fall in love. Jill wants to leave Jakarta because of the tense atmosphere in Indonesia. She persuades Guy to leave with her but, before they depart, she receives a top secret message about war supplies from Shanghai for the Communists in Jakarta.
After competing in a sprint, Archy befriends another competitor, a cynical city-boy, Frank. Archy suggests that he and Frank enlist in the armed forces together, but they are not accepted because Frank is unable to ride a horse, and Archy is underage. They decide to travel to Perth, where they are unknown, to try again to join the army. They travel by train and then walk across an interior desert.
