4 Looking only at individual income and the amount of exports and foreign exchange generated would be subsuming value to the constraints of economic models. Benefits and value are qualitative as well as quantitative. Yet it is impossible to say that the influence of the flower industry is either all bad or all good. I consider that the positive effects of the industry should be highlighted, however, particularly for women, for three main reasons. First, sociocultural conditions are context specific.

I conducted fieldwork in 1988 and 1989 in the Vereda Saucío in the town of Chocontá, located just north of the Sabana, which ultimately led me to focus my public affairs and anthropology dissertation research, on which this book is based, in the cut-flower industry. At the time I was studying mass communication and development in the same area previously studied by Colombian sociologist Orlando Fals Borda. M. in the central plaza of Chocontá to take company buses to work at flower farms located in nearby towns.

Thus, my very name allowed me to negotiate my identity depending on the context. Doing fieldwork with my two children, who were between the ages of two and six years, while challenging was advantageous too. Mothers, grandmothers, and mothers-to-be were happy to talk with me, perhaps thinking that I shared some of the same challenges they faced in coordinating motherhood with work. Being native to Colombia was also helpful in knowing how to navigate the political arena and to avoid bringing up sensitive topics that have forced previous national and foreign researchers to abandon their research.
