When I see them again, I know what to draw. Even if they’re far away, or behind some trees, they’ve become part of my understanding of the city. Stretch Goal: Train for a Sketching Marathon Drawing takes focus, mental energy. It’s common for sketchers to only work for an hour or two on location before running out of steam. After all, the easy in, easy out nature of sketching is part of its appeal (and sustainabilty). But, what if one day you find yourself in a dream location for only a short time?

So even if this amount of contrast is not for you, try it out a few times. If the contrast is too strong for your taste, consider using ink diluted with water to spot-black in gray, sepia or other tones. Or you might look for brush markers in shades of gray or other neutral colors. This will give a softer effect, while still giving you the training you need. Pass Three: Spot Blacks Over Pen & Ink When spotting blacks, you must judge carefully where to place solid darks. In reality there may be shadows in compositionally inconvenient places.

If something comes out odd, just draw right on top of what went before. I recommend dipping pens and a real brush for spot blacks in this exercise. Using the tools that have the most organic, responsive marks will give you the fullest range of options. Don’t worry if these tools are hard to control. This is an exercise in controlled chaos already. Mistakes, drops, ink splatters—they just add to the excitement! Vitality, Not Perfectionism Whatever these drawings might lack in perspective or proportion, they will make up for in vitality.
