UNITED SAUDI ARABIA Although Abdul Aziz united the peninsula of Arabia, the last 20 years of his life would prove to be his loneliest and most desolate. The 1930s were particularly hard for the new king. The country had no money and the only income came from the taxes that pilgrims paid when traveling to Mecca from all over the peninsula for the yearly hajj. This was not enough to sustain a kingdom and its people. Some money also came in from oil, but the development of oil had only just begun.

A king was chosen from among the oldest sons of Abdul Aziz after much discussion and bargaining. If succession naturally fell to the next oldest, Khalid would not have been the rightful successor to the crown. Muhammad bin Abd al-Aziz was older than Khalid and should have been the rightful heir. Muhammad had a bad reputation and was referred to as Muhammad of the Twin Evils, as he was known as a drunk and a degenerate. The House of Saud was divided at this point. Muhammad’s followers wanted him to become king, while Khalid’s supporters felt Khalid was the best choice.

Khalid suffered from many medical ailments. He had a heart problem and this may have hampered his ability to rule to his fullest extent. He relied on Fahd, who was already involved in foreign affairs and oil policy and had developed the League of Arab States, a peacekeeping force. Khalid had open-heart surgery in Cleveland, Ohio, and though it was successful, his health continued to deteriorate. Developing the agriculture on the peninsula was one of Khalid’s most significant domestic accomplishments.
