Seagrasses are precise vegetation; the single staff of flowering crops to recolonise the ocean. They ensue on each continental margin, other than Antarctica, and shape ecosystems that have vital roles in fisheries, fish nursery grounds, prawn fisheries, habitat range and sediment stabilisation. over the past 20 years there was an explosion of analysis and data on all elements of seagrass biology. but the compilation of all this paintings into one booklet has now not been tried formerly. during this ebook specialists in 26 parts of seagrass biology current their paintings in chapters that are state-of–the-art and designed to be priceless to scholars and researchers alike. The publication not just makes a speciality of what has been came across yet what interesting parts are left to find. The ebook is split into sections on taxonomy, anatomy, copy, ecology, body structure, fisheries, administration, conservation and panorama ecology. it's destined to develop into the selected textual content on seagrasses for any marine biology course.

Basic morphological and anatomical studies on as many samples as possible from wide geographic areas and growing under as many different habitat conditions as possible should be conducted. It is very important that good documentation of morphological and anatomical variations within the species from the various study areas becomes available; it has to be encouraged that samples of material used for molecular, physiological, phytochemical and morphological research are deposited in the recognized herbaria for future study and to improve the descriptions of species.

The great handicap for this approach remains the lack of fossil material. Of the 12 presently living seagrass genera some fossil remains of only four are known, and this is insufficient to elaborate in a reliable way the areas of origin of the various families. One would expect that thick seagrass deposits, as presently known from Posidonia species and Thalassodendron ciliatum, must have been formed also in the past. Therefore, it is recommended that seagrass researchers should more cooperate with paleontologists when marine geological deposits are explored.
