Wall spent the summer of 1834 in New Haven where he painted both East Rock and West Rock. The catalogue, Works of Art, for an exhibition at New Haven’s State House on September 24–26, 1844, mentions both paintings. With its flawless balance of sky, biology and geology, Wall’s East Rock is reminiscent of paintings by Frederick Edwin Church (1826–1900), but predates this artist’s famous West Rock by more than a decade. The whereabouts of Wall’s West Rock is unfortunately unknown (See Cover and Image 49 for this painting).
