I wrote a terrible piece about a steel mill, but he was very nice and encouraging. He said I should go on in composition. I wasn’t quite sure, so what I did was go to the Cincinnati Conservatory to study with T. Scott Huston. Basically what I wanted was a second opinion. I had a master’s degree, but I really wanted to know whether I should go on in composition. Huston was very encouraging, and so I went out to Iowa, which was very rewarding. I did my doctorate with Philip Bezanson and Richard Hervig.

What about Ulysses Kay, is he black, or what? There is nothing in the music itself that depicts race. Everything in the music itself identifies with culture. Anybody can choose culture. I can be Italian if I went to Italy and stayed long enough. M. B. Tolson [black American poet] used to say if you took a black child and raised him in China, he would use chopsticks, and he would be Chinese. That is true. You draw on what you know best. I think in many ways as we move onward in the twenty-first century, the question of what a black composer is becomes almost obsolete.

I think one reason is because I grew up in a culturally diverse neighborhood in Cleveland. As far back as I can remember there were boys and girls of different backgrounds. My neighborhood was mostly Jewish, and the only reason I was aware of the fact was that on Jewish holidays at the elementary school, there were would be very few students in class. Actually, my mother told me, much later, that she and my dad had had a discussion about that subject. They didn’t want to “dump” any possible negative “stuff” onto me.
