By H. Walther (auth.), Dr. A. Robert W. McKellar, Professor Takeshi Oka, Professor Boris P. Stoicheff (eds.)

The 5th overseas convention on Laser Spectroscopy or VICOLS, was once held at Jasper Park inn, in Jasper, Canada, June 29 to July three, 1981. Following the culture of the former meetings in Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, and Rottach-Egern, it was once was hoping that VICOLS would supply a chance for act ive scientists to fulfill in an off-the-cuff surroundings for discussions of contemporary advancements and functions in laser spectroscopy. the superb convention amenities and distant situation of Jasper Park resort within the center of the Canadian Rockies, amply fulfilled those expectancies. The convention used to be actually overseas, with 230 scientists from 19 nations partaking. The busy application of invited talks lasted 4 days, with night classes, one a panel dialogue on Rydberg nation spectro scopy, the opposite a full of life poster consultation of roughly 60 post-deadline papers. we want to thank the entire members for his or her amazing contribu tions and for education in their papers, now to be had to a much wider viewers. Our thank you visit the contributors of the overseas steerage Committee for his or her feedback and suggestions. we're in particular happy to have held this convention below the auspices of the foreign Union of natural and utilized Physics. VICOLS don't have been attainable with out the monetary aid of the usual Sciences and Engineering learn Council of Canada, and the place of work of Naval study and Air strength place of work of clinical learn of the U.S.* of America.

18. Note that only the probe beam has the sideband frequency offset but that both probe and saturation beam optical frequencies change with laser tuning: Thus the first-order sideband resonances are offset from Q* by ±w/2. Line widths however are still given by (o-o*)/r = 1. 19. C. D. Levenson, Phys. Rev. A (in press). 20. Small symmetry departures can arise from multiplicative effects of the Doppler background. 21. obe beam intensity and 10 is the saturation intensity. 22. D. L. Eesley, Appl. Phys.

If the gain in the laser stabilisation loop is not high enough to make the phase error ~ 1 there negligible, then a more appropriate phase signal to apply to the feedback filter in arm 2 would be a suitable algebraic combination of ~ 1 and ~ 2 • If, in addition, the loop gain in arm 2 is insufficient to make ~ 2 negligible at the gravity wave frequencies of interest then the displacement signal can be further corrected by addition of a suitable function of this combination of ~ 1 and ~ 2 • The basic arrangement just described is probably the simplest for practical tests and is the one used in our experiments to date, but other variants have obvious advantages.

We have been successful in shifting most of the mechanical r e sonances to higher frequencies, but obviously an even more sophisticated mechanical design will be required to further "clean" this frequency window from mechanical oscillations. At frequencies below I kHz there is a steep increase of the signal . We have not yet analysed this frequency range thoroughly, but we think of two possible sources: a remainder of the ground noise and/or of the geometric beam fluctuations of the laser. 10 5 +---·--------~----------~----·~----t 10~ ~......
