Essentially, observed changes in the light between eclipses can be used to compute "adjustments" and a "rectified" light curve. The two effects, which are usually the major ones, and which have been most discussed and are probably best understood are known as 24 Interacting Binary Stars "ellipticity" and "reflection". The stars were first assumed to be ellipsoids of similar shapes. In Russell's treatment, this rectified curve was that which would be given by two stars, either uniformly bright or completely darkened at the limb which showed circular disks whose radii equaled the semi-major axes of the real stars and whose surface brightnesses were those of the irradiated (and also the eclipsed) sides of the true components.
We are dealing with the same phenomenon that produces the kind of variations in the intensity of the absorption lines discovered by Bailey and found in several spectroscopic binaries, as mentioned in the introductory Chapter. However in this case one must be dealing with continuous radiation from the stream as it was postulated by Sahade (1959) in the case of UW Canis Majoris to account for the disappearance of the lines of the secondary component during the phase interval where the radial velocities from this component are of recession.
