Airy’s sense of his own worth was legendary. In his Autobiography he wrote of his graduation in the University’s Senate House as Senior Wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos (1823): ‘I, as Senior Wrangler, was led up first to receive the degree, and rarely has the Senate House rung with such applause as then filled it. ’24 With Airy at the helm, the Observatory became a veritable factory, complete with a division of labour in which different groups of employees were set to work making observations, recordings and tortuous calculations for very little reward.
Prompted by his friend and advisor Whewell, Forbes prepared a lengthy ‘Report on Meteorology’ for the Oxford meeting of the BAAS (1832). ’ Of the many branches of physics involved in meteorology, the most important was heat: No one department [of Meteorology] is exempt from its influence; no one substance in nature seems independent of the action of this subtile [sic] element. Impalpable though it be, yet since we possess such accurate means of investigating many of its laws, it is surprising how very imperfect are the notions entertained by mankind at large, and even by the scientific world, as to the importance of the part which it assumes in the economy of nature.
These ‘practical professionals’ played a leading role in the making of nineteenth-century geological science. On the one hand, they focused on rock strata rather than on questions of fossils per se, origins of the earth, or landforms. William ‘Strata’ Smith was one of many such professional men who used their practical surveying skills to detail rock strata. On the other hand, these practical professionals emphasised detailed, meticulous observation in opposition to speculative theorising. 77 The Geological Society of London included among its early members bankers, publishers and businessmen.
