For example, one large chemical company's human resources department reacted to a top management complaint that the company's managers did not plan their work enough or develop their employees. So, the human resources department concocted a performance management system. However, the implementation invented by the human resources department proved ponderous. Managers were forced to attend a three-day training session. The training taught managers how to use loads of forms the human resources department devised for the performance management system.

Yet, for the purposes of the human resources profit center, cost accounting is both necessary and easy to do, since it is very logical and straightforward. How does one begin costing out a business problem, solution, or improvement benefit? Simply: 1. Jot down each possible expense or benefit 2. Calculate the dollars associated with each expense or benefit A list of typical expenses or benefits that can be costed out are listed in Figure 2-2.
