Cross the green on the path ahead of you, to the top left-hand corner. Joining the road at the crenellated villa ahead of you, turn right and go straight ahead down Old Palace Lane, which curves left and takes you down to the river. Turn left onto the towpath to reach Richmond Riverside. The riverside was pedestrianized and terraced in the late 1980s, which, along with the Georgian buildings that flank it, makes the whole place feel a bit like a stage set. It’s a busy spot, especially on sunny summer days.

The land was enclosed in spring so that grass could grow, and opened for grazing in August on Lammas Day. In an echo of this ancient tradition, cattle are still brought onto the marsh in the summer for grazing. Go straight ahead, following the long path ahead of you, ignoring the wooden cycle path sign to the right. This is the most open part of the walk, with meadows to the left, a line of pylons ahead and, to the right, horses grazing in their paddocks and a line of low industrial buildings beyond.

The made-up ground has been carefully managed ever since: looking at it today, it’s hard to imagine that there was ever anything here but unspoilt countryside. 5km beyond Ham House you come to Teddington Lock, the collective name for the series of locks and weirs that mark the end of the tidal river. Some 1km beyond this, you join a paved road which heads past attractive Edwardian houses and, eventually, into the centre of Kingston. Stay alongside the river, The Thames Towpath 35 following the cycle route through Canbury Gardens, where the terraced garden at the riverside Boater’s Inn is a nice stop for a drink.
