It’s about skill or the lack of it. But we can’t complete the picture without talking about emotions. We are dealing with people here. Real people. And often the driving force behind difficult behavior is some sort of emotional state, usually one of anger or frustration, coupled with the other two elements. A number of times we’ve stated that most people aren’t difficult all the time. Again, think of yourself. You have good and bad days, patient and impatient days. Most of the time you behave constructively, but not always, right?

In other words, when we are prepared, we are less likely to act badly. We are less likely to make a mountain out of the molehill. We are less likely to escalate a difficult situation. When difficult behavior comes from someone who doesn’t usually act that way, it can catch us unawares. That’s when we make mistakes. Back to the question. As we said earlier, people act in situation-specific ways. Also, everyone is capable of acting in difficult ways. True, some do it more often than others, but everyone, let’s repeat, everyone is difficult sometimes, even the most mild-mannered individual.

Leaping Before You Look Inaction isn’t the only fast track to victimhood. There is another risk. Most of us, when faced with a difficult person, get frustrated at their antics, even angry. After all, who likes to feel manipulated, bullied, pushed, and pulled? Nobody. I certainly understand if your first reaction or desire with respect to difficult people is to put them in their place or to do anything just to beat them. Again, that’s normal. But while it may be normal, it can put you in a worse position in terms of dealing with that difficult person.
