Our role is to facilitate the client’s self-explorations and verbal expressions; to help him examine his thoughts and feelings about important issues as he enters into and progresses through therapy. In the beginning, because of his history, he may dwell on his particular problem, and on his historical, social and emotional investments in his problem. Or, as he experiences changes in his speech with his clinician, he may examine his fears, doubts, and expectations for the future—his future as a former speech defective.
In addition to Strupp’s comments about the importance of trust, Lennard and Bernstein (1960) pointed out that the client must have faith in the clinician as someone who knows what he is doing. Such demonstrations of the counselor/clinician guiding the client into gaining control over his speech mechanism help to reinforce that faith and encourage the client to take the risks involved in turning himself over to the care and nurturing and tactics of the clinician, and ultimately to his own self-control (Kanfer & Karoly 1972).
