3 .... 4 .... ● ● ● 5 Possibilities for the future development of the campaign In order to explain our proposal for the long term, we must shortly analyse the kind of organisations that we would like to invite to take part in the campaign. You will have observed that in the whole document we’ve proposed these to be people’s movements only from the South, and solidarity/ environmental organisations both in the South and in the North. We didn’t even mention Northern people’s movements due to several facts, mainly due to the fact that neo-liberalism has (up to now) affected the South in a much more destructive way than the North, which has caused the development of what we call here people’s movements in the South much more than in the North.

The contrast between these symbolic codings and the associated flows of meanings could not be starker. One of the features of this book is its ability to address the production of symbolic codes through the use of qualitative data derived from multiple sites using digital recording techniques. This treatment makes explicit examples of innovative agency within movements which generate significant repertoires of action and ‘frames’. Analytically we are suggesting that carnival represents a mode of protest which invokes at a micro-interactive level the kinds of power relations associated with the theatrical by Goffman (see Chapter 1).
