In the context of the above trends, and the others not touched upon, I find one challenge for educational leaders is to understand educational policies, strategies, and day-to-day actions as related to the signs of the times and to the evangelical transformation called for especially in Gaudium et Spes and more recent ecclesial documents. This stimulates the question of motivation, which as I mentioned previously is a key factor in leadership.
Public secondary education received impetus from several NEA committees at this time, most notably the Cardinal Principles Report in 1918. 55 For the most part, Catholic high school activity was conducted by religious orders. 56 The entry of the United States into World War I, with the War’s aftermath, increased the hostility towards anything deemed “foreign,” especially of German vintage.
