Further, smoothing is desirable in satisfying the assumptions of the random ﬁeld theory (RFT), which is used in correcting for multiple comparisons [14,15]. For RFT to work, the Gaussianness and smoothness of data are needed [14,16]. As the amount of smoothing increases, Gaussianness and smoothness of data increases. With these motivations, we present a new framework of smoothing scalar and vector measurements using heat kernel smoothing, which is equivalent to performing isotropic diﬀusion but without discretizing the diﬀusion equation.
